On the 60th anniversary of its arrival, the Avro Lancaster bomber owned and flown by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum returned to the Goderich Airport.
I went on the Saturday which turned out to be the less busy of the two days. It was a great chance to see the Lancaster up close, and I figured out the vibration reduction wasn’t working on my telephoto.
During an unseasonably warm weekend in February my buddy Dan asked if I wanted to go up and do some aerial photography practice before our schedules got busy in the spring and summer. There’s not much that will stop me from saying yes to shooting out the open side of his kit Piper J-3 Cub replica.
We ended up circling Exeter before flying over to Hensall, Dashwood, and the Port Blake shoreline before landing at dusk. It was a lot colder than I expected, but still a great time.
I’ve been going to events at the Sexsmith Airport in Exeter for years and, luckily enough, so has my buddy with a pilot’s licence Dan. Recently Dan bought a home-built replica of a Piper J-3 Cub and offered to take me up for a ride the next time the weather was clear and I had some free time in Exeter.
Finally everything lined up and I took a ride in the front seat with the window open over Exeter and the Huron county landscape. It was a fantastic time and I’m already looking forward to the next time I can take a spin in the John Deere green J-3 Cub!

The day after the excitement of Skyfest 50 in Hamilton, my dad and I headed down to St. Thomas for the biannual Airfest show!
It was my first time attending the show and it was a fantastic day of getting up close and personal with some vintage and unusual aircraft. Sunday was overcast and a bit quieter than the Saturday show apparently was, which made for some great front row seats for takeoff, landing, and startup. Among the planes in attendance was a whole range of Harvards, Beechcrafts, the CWHM’s PBY, and a flight of WWI replica airplanes!
After the hustle of other airshows in the area, St. Thomas Airfest is a great way to see awesome aircraft in a more low-key setting. Really looking forward to going back the next time it runs!
